The majority hold it to be Makkan; some scholars say it was revealed in Madīnah, or even twice, given its central role in prayer.

📖The situation of its revelation

Al-Fātiḥah was revealed early in Makkah, at the very foundation of the Prophet ﷺ mission, to open the Book and to open every prayer.

It is reported that no comparable surah was sent down in the Torah, the Gospel, or the rest of the Qur'an — the Prophet ﷺ called it “the greatest surah in the Qur'an.”

Because the entire prayer is built upon it, it was given at the outset so the believers would have a complete conversation with their Lord in every rak'ah.

🕮Meaning

The surah is a perfect balance of praise, devotion, and supplication. Its first half praises Allah — Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement.

The turning point, “You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help,” moves from speaking about Allah to speaking directly to Him.

The second half is the servant's central request: guidance to the straight path — the path of the blessed, not of those who earned anger nor those who went astray.

✨A clear demonstration

Watch the illustration above as you read these points:

1
A dialogue in every prayer — In a hadith qudsi, Allah says: “I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant in two halves.” When you say “All praise is to Allah,” Allah replies, “My servant has praised Me.”
2
Praise → then ask — The surah teaches the etiquette of du'ā: praise Allah first, affirm you worship Him alone, then ask for what you need most — guidance.
3
The one request that carries all — Of everything a person could ask, Al-Fātiḥah asks for the straight path — because with guidance, every other good follows.
1
