The idol-worshippers of Makkah — and, in other narrations, some of the People of the Book — asked the Prophet ﷺ: “Describe to us your Lord; what is He made of? What is His lineage?”
In answer, Allah revealed this surah defining Him not by matter or ancestry but by His absolute oneness and self-sufficiency.
It cut through every false idea of God — that He has a body, a family, a partner, or an origin.
“He is Allah, the One” — utterly single, without partner or equal.
“Allah, the Eternal Refuge” (al-Ṣamad) — the One to whom all creation turns in need, who needs nothing and no one.
“He neither begets nor is born, and none is comparable to Him” — He has no parent, no child, and nothing in creation resembles Him.
