When the Prophet's ﷺ infant sons passed away, his enemies — a narration names al-'Āṣ ibn Wā'il — mocked him as “abtar,” meaning “cut off,” a man with no lineage to carry his name.
It was a taunt meant to say his mission would die with him.
Allah answered the insult directly, granting him al-Kawthar — abundance beyond measure — and turning the insult back on the one who threw it.
“Indeed, We have granted you abundance (al-Kawthar)” — vast good in this life and the next, including a river in Paradise by the same name.
“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice” — respond to this gift with devoted worship and gratitude, not with despair.
“Indeed, it is your enemy who is cut off” — the one who mocked is the one truly without legacy; the Prophet's ﷺ name is honoured across the world.
