An-Nās completes the pair of refuge-surahs, turning from outer harms to the most dangerous inner one: the whisper in the heart.
It was revealed alongside Al-Falaq as a shelter for the Prophet ﷺ and his community against the unseen.
Where Al-Falaq seeks refuge from external evils, An-Nās seeks refuge from the evil that speaks inside the chest.
It calls on Allah by three names — Lord of mankind, King of mankind, God of mankind — rising from care, to authority, to worship.
Refuge is sought from “the retreating whisperer” — the one who whispers temptation, then slips away when Allah is remembered.
That whisperer works “in the breasts of mankind,” and comes “from among the jinn and mankind” — evil suggestion can come from unseen and human sources alike.
