The leaders of Quraysh offered the Prophet ﷺ a compromise: “Worship our gods for a year, and we will worship your God for a year.”
They wanted to blend the two, hoping to dilute the pure worship of Allah.
This surah was revealed as a clear, final refusal — a line drawn between sincere monotheism and idolatry.
“Say: O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship” — an open declaration of separation in belief.
The refusal is repeated for emphasis: not now, and not ever, will the worship be mixed.
“For you is your religion, and for me is mine” — a firm boundary of creed, alongside a principle: no compulsion in matters of faith.
