Al-Falaq and An-Nās — together called al-Mu'awwidhatān, “the two of seeking refuge” — were given as a divine shelter against every hidden harm.
A well-known narration connects them to a time when a spell (siḥr) was worked against the Prophet ﷺ by Labīd ibn al-A'ṣam; Allah sent these surahs and the Prophet ﷺ recovered as they were recited.
They teach that safety is sought from the Lord of the daybreak — the One who splits the darkness open with light.
“I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak” — the One who brings light out of darkness can bring relief out of every fear.
Refuge is sought from four evils: the evil of all He created, the darkness when it gathers, those who blow on knots (witchcraft), and the envier when he envies.
It names the unseen harms people most fear — and places them all under the power of the One Lord.
